SEER2 Explained:
What the Ratings Actually
Mean for Your Bill

By Element HVAC ยท April 2025 ยท 7 min read

When you're shopping for a new HVAC system, every contractor throws SEER2 numbers at you. "This one's 16 SEER2." "That one's 20 SEER2." "You really should get the high-efficiency unit." What does it actually mean โ€” and how much will it actually save you in Texas?

SEER2 stands for Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio 2. It measures how efficiently an air conditioner converts electricity into cooling over an entire cooling season. A higher SEER2 number = less electricity used to produce the same amount of cooling. Starting in 2023, the Department of Energy updated the rating system from SEER to SEER2, using a stricter testing standard. A 15 SEER2 unit is roughly equivalent to a 15.2 SEER unit under the old standard.

The Minimum Standard in Texas (and the South)

As of January 2023, the minimum SEER2 rating for new AC equipment installed in Texas and the South is 15 SEER2. You can no longer legally install a new system below this threshold in our region. Any contractor offering a 13 or 14 SEER unit is either selling old inventory or operating outside the rules โ€” ask questions.

What Each SEER2 Level Actually Costs You Per Month

These numbers are based on a typical 3-ton system in a 2,000 sq ft Texas home, running approximately 2,800 hours per year (Texas average), at $0.13/kWh (Texas average residential rate):

SEER2 RatingSystem TypeMonthly Cost (Est.)Annual Costvs. 10 SEER Savings
10 SEEROld/legacy~$195~$2,340โ€”
13 SEERPre-2023 min~$150~$1,800~$540/yr
15 SEER2Current minimum~$130~$1,560~$780/yr
17 SEER2Mid-efficiency~$115~$1,380~$960/yr
20 SEER2High-efficiency~$97~$1,170~$1,170/yr
22+ SEER2Ultra-premium~$89~$1,065~$1,275/yr

Is the Higher SEER2 Worth the Premium?

The honest answer: usually yes for mid-efficiency (17โ€“18 SEER2), and it depends for ultra-high efficiency (20+ SEER2).

The price gap between a 15 SEER2 and a 17 SEER2 system is typically $400โ€“$800. At ~$180/year additional savings, you recover that in 2โ€“4 years. For most Texas homeowners, this math clearly favors mid-efficiency.

The jump from 17 to 20+ SEER2 can add $1,500โ€“$3,000 to the system price. At ~$210/year additional savings over 17 SEER2, payback stretches to 7โ€“14 years. High-efficiency makes more sense if you plan to stay in the home long-term, your home has variable loads (zoning helps), or you want the best comfort performance (variable-speed systems at 18โ€“22 SEER2 run more continuously at lower capacity, which dramatically improves humidity control โ€” a major Texas comfort issue).

What About Variable Speed vs. Single Stage?

Most high-SEER2 units are variable-speed or two-stage systems. This matters beyond just efficiency numbers:

In Texas, humidity control is not a luxury โ€” it's a real comfort issue. A variable-speed 18 SEER2 system often feels dramatically more comfortable than a single-stage 16 SEER2 system, even apart from the efficiency difference.

๐Ÿ“‹ What to Ask Your Contractor Before agreeing to any system, ask for the SEER2 rating in writing, whether it's single-stage, two-stage, or variable speed, the projected monthly savings vs. your current system, and the full installed price โ€” not just equipment cost.
โœ“ Our Recommendation for Most Texas Homes A 17โ€“18 SEER2 two-stage or variable-speed system hits the sweet spot of efficiency, comfort, and payback period. Unless your budget is very tight (in which case 15 SEER2 minimum is fine) or you're optimizing for maximum long-term savings (20+ SEER2), the 17โ€“18 range delivers the best overall value.

Frontdoor Upgrade Program โ€” High-Efficiency at a Lower Price

Through the Frontdoor Equipment Upgrade Program, we're currently offering 17โ€“20 SEER2 system replacements at 30โ€“50% below typical retail pricing. This is the exact scenario where high-efficiency becomes financially straightforward โ€” because you're getting the premium equipment at a non-premium price.

High-Efficiency Systems at 30โ€“50% Off

Carrier, Trane, and Lennox high-efficiency units through Frontdoor's buying program. Members get priority โ€” but non-members may qualify too. Limited availability.
