Our pricing page lists starting ranges for every system, IAQ upgrade, and repair part we install. But a range only helps if you understand why your job might land at the low end, the high end, or somewhere past it entirely. Here's the honest breakdown.
What "Good / Better / Best" Actually Means
We price most equipment in three tiers. It's not a sales trick โ it maps directly to real mechanical differences in how the equipment runs:
Good
Single-stage operation. Runs at 100% or off. Meets the current Texas minimum efficiency code. The right call on a tight budget or a rental property.
Better
Two-stage operation. Runs at ~65% most of the time, less cycling, better humidity control, quieter. The sweet spot for most homes.
Best
Variable-speed operation. Runs anywhere from 30โ100%, nearly continuously at low capacity. Best comfort, best humidity control, best efficiency, quietest.
The price gap between tiers is almost entirely the cost of the compressor and controls technology inside the unit โ not markup. A two-stage or variable-speed compressor is a genuinely more sophisticated (and more expensive to manufacture) piece of equipment than a single-stage one.
What Makes Pricing Fluctuate
Two homes with the "same" system can land at very different prices. These are the real drivers:
Tonnage / BTU sizing
A properly sized 2-ton system costs less than a 5-ton system โ bigger equipment, bigger price, regardless of tier.
Ductwork condition
If existing ducts need modification, sealing, or replacement to work with the new system, that's added labor and material.
Accessibility
An attic unit in a single-story home is a different job than a rooftop unit on a 3-story building, or equipment crammed in a tight closet.
Electrical requirements
Older homes sometimes need a panel upgrade or new circuit to safely support a new high-efficiency system.
Permits & code compliance
Permit fees and code-required upgrades (like a disconnect or updated venting) vary by city and are passed through at cost.
Refrigerant line length
Longer runs between the indoor and outdoor units mean more line set and more refrigerant.
IAQ add-ons
Bundling a media filter, UV light, or humidifier into the same install is cheaper than adding it later as a separate visit.
Timing
A scheduled spring install is priced differently than an emergency mid-August replacement with no lead time.
The Standard Repair vs. Replace Equation
When a repair estimate comes in, the industry-standard quick test is what's often called the $5,000 Rule:
๐ Worked Example
We also weigh this alongside the 50% Rule (if the repair costs more than 50% of a full replacement, replace) and the system's age against a 12โ18 year typical Texas lifespan. We walk through all three with worked scenarios in our full repair vs. replace breakdown โ this is the same math, just the fast version.
